Saw Swee Hock Student Centre (New Student Centre - London School of Economics) November 2014

The Saw Swee Hock Student Centre (New Student Centre - London School of Economics) > Runner up in the 2014 Sterling Prize Awards

Swift Brickwork Contractors Limited are delighted to have successfully completed The London School of Economics New Student Centre (now called the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre), working for Geoffrey Osborne Limited. The New Student Centre is an important undertaking for LSE as it is the first entirely new building in over 40 years. Its purpose will be to transform student life and further LSE’s aim of creating a world class estate.

The building was the subject of an International design competition and was won by Dublin based Architects O’Donnell & Tuomey. Their design was described as “creating a building that will glow with light and activity at night, and be engaging, open and social at all times”. Structural Engineers, Dewhurst MacFarlane were overseeing the project, ensuring that the large perforated brickwork elevations remain buildable and durable. The Brickwork design presented many challenges to deliver the elevations of inclined and perforated brickwork. These were built using Coleford Brick & Tile’s Saxon and Wessex blends of facings.
